Southern California is filled with beautiful and eclectic cities and towns. But when it came to choosing the location for Bella Sera, nothing quite compared to the unique and special charm the City of Monrovia offers. Located 20 miles northeast of Los Angeles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, we are happy to be part of a city that has so much to offer. Here are just a few highlights of what makes Monrovia’s community so great.
History of Monrovia
It’s hard to believe that this growing city of nearly 40,000 residents once contained only a few scattered homes and dirt roads. During the late 1880s, a group of successful banking and railroad building men converted the empty land into a community, one that was “typical of its time, yet unique in spirit.”
The city was named after William Monroe, who had a significant influence on the town and was the president of the Monrovia Land and Water Company. Under his guidance, the company promised to plant pepper trees along the streets, provide free water to the town and install electric streetlights. Because of his contribution and continued service, the town named the city after him.
Keeping the Old Town Charm
Today, Monrovia is a well-developed city, hosting residents from all over the place. However, the city has kept its charming roots with Old Town Monrovia, an area where original brick buildings have been preserved and residents can enjoy a mix of charming shops and local restaurants. Old Town Monrovia is also the location for many community festivals and events.
Old Town’s Friday Night Street Fair
Every Friday night, Old Town Monrovia transforms into a lively street fair that everyone in the family can enjoy. With the street closed off to traffic, the historic area is filled with local food vendors, freshly harvested produce and live music and entertainment. Kids will also have fun at the Kid Zone, which is loaded with carnival rides, pony rides, a petting zoo and so much more! As one of the largest weekly events in the state, you do not want to miss this fun night out! For more information, visit the Monrovia Friday Night Family Street Fair’s website.
Monrovia is home to many high-tech, bio-tech and aerospace companies. Miyachi Unitek, AeroVironment and Ducommon Aerostructures are just a few examples of high-tech companies located in Monrovia. The city is also the location for company headquarters like Trader Joe’s, Tommy’s Hamburgers and Naked Juice. The collection of industry leaders all located in Monrovia allows for creative and forward-thinking minds to collectively build and innovate a better future together.
Monrovia Canyon Park & Wildlife
If you’re a fan of the outdoors, then you will love Monrovia Canyon Park! The 80-acre city park is filled with countless trails, a 30-foot waterfall, camping options, a nature center and a cabin facility to host events. Being so close to the hillside, Monrovia also takes wildlife preservation very seriously. In fact, the city even has a 1,400+ Wilderness Preserve.
One of the Most Filmed Towns in LA County
Monrovia’s streets are filled with charm, so it’s no wonder that filmmakers come to the City of Monrovia to film Hollywood’s biggest movies. Films like Legally Blonde, Father of the Bride and Back to the Future Part II have all used Monrovia as the setting to help make these great stories come to life.
